My OA Abuela, Nana
She was 4’6” Cuban fireball with a personality that exploded in a room. She was passionate about life. On one side she was a remarkable woman who had accomplished so much in her day—leaving her homeland of Cuba for America in her teens, graduating from college in the 1930s, the first Queen of Cypress Gardens, missionary in Africa and widowed mother of two boys, a Spanish professor (at a Florida college) — the list is amazing.
However, it was her love and laughter I remember more than anything. There was always such joy when she was around. She had this belly laugh that was contagious. All of us would laugh until we cried when we were together. She loved us so deeply and held us with such conviction. I was so thankful to have such an 83-year-old best friend as an adult. Her wisdom offered me such insights. I always wanted to share her with the world. If only everyone was as blessed to have such a unique grandmother in their life, the world would be a different place. “Mi Abuela”, I honor your Ordinarily Amazing life. Thank you for the priceless talks, moments and memories.
